Augustaion

1. Introduction

The Augustaion1 was an open space that lay until today south of the church of Hagia Sophia.2 It was named this way in honor of the mother of Constantine the Great, to whom the title of Augusta had been bestowed. In this area stood her statue rested on a column.3 It is not possible to determine with any accuracy its dimensions.4 It preserved its prestige throughout the centuries because of its vicinity with buildings related to the public life and to the administration. It carried a great ideological and symbolic meaning, while it connected the great church of Orthodoxy with the imperial ceremonial.

2. Function

The Augustaion initially functioned as a food market. When porticoes were added surrounding it, it started to lose the air of a public square. After the rebuilding of Thomaites in the 7th century its relation with Hagia Sophia became all the more closer. Only Procopius among the historians5 calls the area "ἀγοράν" (forum). The rest of them think the Augustaion as a forecourt annexed to Hagia Sophia. The middle Byzantine and late Byzantine sources characterize it as "αὐλήν", "αὐλαία", "προαύλιον" (courtyard) etc.6 It was intended for imperial processions. The emperor crossed the Augustaion in order to enter into the church of Hagia Sophia. During the coronation of the emperors the people and the army were gathered there. The existence of gateways as well as the fact that the open area was enclosed with walls and porticoes attests that the access to the area was restricted.

3. History of the monument - Building phases

During its long history, the Augustaion had been undergone many changes, and various building phases have been discerned.

3.1. 2nd - 3rd centuries

Septimius Severus erected a square with four surrounding porticoes, the so-called Tetrastoon.7 It was a food market. Any information about the monument is limited. The Augustaion occupied a part of this square. At the center of the Tetrastoon there was the statue of god Helios upon a column.8

3.2. 4th century

Constantine the Great after the transfer of the capital of the empire to Constantinople in 330, founded public buildings and embellished older ones, so as the ancient city changed its appearance. At the end of one of the porticoes of the Tetrastoon the temples of Rhea and Tyche were erected. In the eastern part of the square the Augustaion was formed. At the southwest of the Augustaion there were the baths of Zeuxippos,9 whereas at the east one of the two Senates built by the emperor. At the northwest the Milion extended, where all the distances starting from Constantinople were calculated, and the Basilica, an existing edifice. From Milion and Augustaion started a road flanked with porticoes, Regia or Mese, which defined the south side of the square. In 360 the first Hagia Sophia was erected, which have been remained until today in this place beyond any changes.

3.3. 5th century

In 404 Hagia Sophia and the Senate were burnt down and were rebuilt in the same area. Near the Augustaion there were porticoes, shops, workshops, private residences, the Tribunal10 and a monastery. Between Hagia Sophia and the Augustaion the Patriarchate was built. On the eastern side of the square, next to the Senate was lying Chalke Gate,11 the monumental gateway to the Great Palace. In 459 under Leo I the prefect Theodosios12 surrounded in all probability the Augustaion with porticoes.

3.4. 6th century

In 532 during the Nika Riot, the Augustaion and the nearby buildings were burnt down to ashes.13 These buildings were restored by Justinian.14 During this period the area took its final form.15 The square was still adjacent to many important buildings, such as new Hagia Sophia and the Great Palace. The Augustaion was paved with marble paving-stones16 and the famous column of Justinian was placed. According to Procopius the square had porticoes on all four sides.17 Thus, the Augustaion was formed into a closed area with porticoes and walls. On its southern and its western sides were opened the Pinsos Gate and the Melete Gate that connected Mese with Augustaion.

3.5. 7th century

During the 7th century on the southeastern side of the Augustaion a big edifice was probably built by patriarch Thomas I (607-610), the so-called Thomaites. It remained in this place until the 16th century. This period of time the Senate was identified with Magnaura. The «Thomaites» was a thre-aisled, apsidal auditorium, associated with the Graet Palace complex.18 According to the sources, the hall was preserved until the 16th century.

3.6. 12th - 13th centuries

In 1182 during the revolt of caesar John Komnenos against the empress Mary of Antioch19 the rebellions occupied Augustaion, Milion20 as well as the church that Alexios I had built in the 11th century at the west of the square. The imperial army demolished the gates of the Augustaion, in order to confront the enemies that had found shelter inside.21 After the end of the Latin occupation, around 1268/ 71, the Augustaion and some other adjacent buildings appear to have belonged to the property of Hagia Sophia.22

3.7. 15th - 16th centuries

According to Buondelmonti, in the early-15th century the Augustaion was in a state of ruins.23 In the middle of the 16th century, according to Pierre Gilles, only the fragments of seven columns were still preserved from the square.24

4. Decoration

The Augustaion was decorated with statues, often placed upon honorary columns. Constantine the Great erected a statue for his mother Augusta Helen surmounting a column of purple marble. On the square stood his own statue as well upon a column, the base of which was flanked by the statues of his three sons, of Licinius and later of Julian. It was replaced by the silver equestrian statue of Theodosios the Great. In this case as well the column was surrounded by the statues of his sons. Among the most important monuments was the column of Justinian surmounted by his colossal equestrian statue.25 It took the place of the statue of Theodosios the Great whose horse probably was reused. He held on his left hand an orb, while his right one was raised towards the East expressing his protection. In front of this monument the statues of three barbarian kings stood in a posture of submission. The base of the column of the silver statue of Eudoxia (wife of Arkadios) has been preserved, which stood in front of the Senate, south of Hagia Sophia.26 The column with the statue of Leo I was also placed in the same area with the previous one.27

Πάτρια Κωνσταντινουπόλεως - Patria of Constantinople

Patria of Constantinople

1. Introduction

Patria is a literary genre dedicated to the history, topography, monuments, and legends of a city. It originates in the work of Kallinikos of Petra (3rd century AD) who wrote on Rome. Although writers of the 5th and 6th centuries deal with cities in the provinces, such as Tarsos, Nicaea, and Miletos among others, after the 6th century the genre focuses exclusively on Constantinople.1

"Patria of Constantinople" (Πάτρια Κωνσταντινουπόλεως) is a conventional name for a corpus of texts belonging to this genre and devoted to Constantinople. The collection as it has survived comprises the following texts:2 The Patria of Constantinople by Hesychios Illustris; the Parastaseis syntomoi chronikai (“brief historical notes”) from the 8th century; the Narration of the Construction of Hagia Sophia written probably in the 9th century; the Patria of ca. 995; the so-called “topographical recensions”; and finally a post-Byzantine text, the “Miraculous Story” on the column of Xerolophos in Constantinople.3 The interrelationship between those texts, especially between the Parastaseis and the Patria of the 10th century, is very complex.4

Although the Patria provides crucial information about the city, facts and fables are frequently combined (and confused), thus diminishing its worth as a historical source. On the other hand, Patria offers an insight into the mentality of some parts of the population of Constantinople and is a testimony for the city's transition into the medieval city.

2. Patria of Hesychios Illustris

Hesychios of Miletos was a pagan historian, active in the 6th century AD. His work Chronike Historia (Χρονικὴ ἱστορία), now surviving only in fragments, was a universal history starting with the Assyrian king Bel and ending with the death of emperor Anastasios I in 518. A part of this work, dealing with the history of the city of Byzantion up to the time of Constantine I, was revised and incorporated in the Patria of the 10th century. In this text, historical facts and legends are creatively combined.5

3. Parastaseis Syntomoi Chronikai

The Parastaseis syntomoi chronikai, the best-studied patriographic text, is an anonymous work. The Parastaseis includes information about a great variety of topics with sections dedicated to the sights of Constantinople, such as churches, statues, and the Hippodrome and its monuments. The text of the Parastaseis is known from a single manuscript now in Paris (Par.gr. 1336) dating to the 11th century. The reduction of the text is generally placed in the 8th century.6 That it survives in only one manuscript, in combination with the fact that the text is at places corrupt and difficult to understand, indicates that the Parastaseis might have been an unfinished compilation of various sources put together by an unknown editor or editors, and as such it probably presents an intermediary stage in the patriographic tradition.7 The intermediary nature of the text is reflected in the lack of any stylistic and thematic unity as some subjects, such as the Hippodrome, are included more than once.

In the Parastaseis there is a predilection towards “wonders” and heavy reliance on hearsay. The style of the entries is highly didactic and there are references to “philosophers” and “lovers of knowledge” who were the only ones capable to understand and appreciate the deeper significance of the monuments in the city, a meaning that was often arcane. Related to this presumed esoteric meaning of ancient art is a marked suspicion towards pagan statues, which indicates a change in the mentality of the people of Constantinople.8

Scholarly opinions on the Parastaseis vary. Its language has been characterized as “an idiotic prose, where we look in vain for any sort of order, chronological or logical...”9 It has also been considered as “a kind of tourist's guidebook to the curiosities of Constantinople,”10 although this has been correctly doubted as the text, at least in its present form, fails to contextualize the information it offers into the wider urban fabric of Constantinople.11 Others consider it as “a product […] of a sort of local history society,”12 a group of self-fashioned “philosophers.” Finally, its contents have been interpreted as “a political pamphlet directed against the cult of Constantine I that was being developed under the Iconoclast emperors and their successors” alerting to the malicious miraculous powers of pagan statues.13

The Parastaseis is often used as a source of the Byzantines’ response to antique statuary, although the peculiarities of the text and its reception are usually not taken into consideration.14 Extensive parts of the Parastaseis, in an abbreviated and simplified form, were incorporated into the so-called “Anonymous of Treu,”15 dated to the 10th century.

4. Narrative of the Construction of Hagia Sophia

The Narrative offers a fictionally coherent and frequently preposterous chronicle of the construction of Hagia Sophia by the emperor Justinian I, with one section dedicated to the repairs of Justin II.16 It also includes a description of the liturgical implements (such as the ambo), vessels, and relics in Hagia Sophia. The composition of the original version has been dated to the second half of the 9th century.17 The text of the Narrative was slightly enlarged and incorporated in the Patria of 995.

The Narrative contains several factual errors. For example, the architect Ignatios replaces Anthemios and Isidoros, the two actual architects of the building. A consistent theme is that God, who communicated the plan of the building to Justinian through an angel, inspired the work. God shows his favor for the new building through several interventions and angels even offer advice on technical matters. There is also an effort to connect Hagia Sophia with biblical prototypes, especially the Temple of Jerusalem. The technical vocabulary of the author is fairly precise.18

The Narration was translated in other languages including Latin, Slavonic, and Ottoman, a testimony to the story's popularity.19

5. The Patria of the 10th century

The Patria of Hesychios, large amounts of the text in Parastaseis, and the Narration, were incorporated in the Patria of the 10th century.20 In opposition to the Parastaseis, however, the Patria survive in more than 60 manuscripts, which present some variety in style, organization, and content. Furthermore, the Patria is a much larger work, containing 20 chapters not found in the Parastaseis, as well as additions to the other works it incorporates.

The most interesting and fairly homogeneous part consists of several notices dedicated to various foundations and buildings of Constantinople, both religious (churches, monasteries) and secular (palaces, aristocratic villas). There is a tendency towards systematic chronology, with the mention of the reigning emperor at the time of construction and other chronological indications. Apart from these, in terms of content the Patria of the 10th century blur the line between fact and fiction.

The Patria could be considered as one of the final stages of the patriographic literature of the capital.21 Despite variations, the corpus was not substantially modified after the 10th century.

6. The “topographical recensions”

At some point during the 11th century an editor or editors systematized the entries of the Patria according to itineraries.22 Judging from the number of surviving manuscripts (only seven), this new reduction was not very popular. The most successful of these recensions was dedicated to Alexios I Komnenos. According to Dagron, these recensions indicate a significant change, since they are presented as “official” and “objective” works on the history and monuments of Constantinople, written by members of the imperial court, in opposition to the informal style of the Parastaseis or the Patria.23

7. The “Miraculous Story” on the column of Xerolophos in Constantinople

This text, which dates to the 16th century24 and was written by a certain John Malaxos,25 provides a highly fanciful history of the column of Xerolophos. Located on the seventh hill of Constantinople, this historiated column, of which just the pedestal survives today, was originally part of the Forum of Arkadios (constructed c. 400).26

The story begins with Byzas and ends with Leo VI. The principal actor, however, is Septimius Severus: according to the “Miraculous Story,” he put in the sculptural decoration of the column the future history of Constantinople until the appearance of the “antichrist,” revealed to him through a certain “philosopher and astrologist John.” Thus, Malaxos wanted to convey through “Miraculous story” the idea that Constantinople's destiny was beyond the control and the power of its emperors and inhabitants, but rather it had been decided even before its foundation.27

The “Miraculous Story” presents the traits of the patriographic tradition: the sources are confused and manipulated in order to serve the goals of the author; fact is fused with fiction and legend; and the result is, above all, a work of the author's imagination.

Στράτο 1 (Aθήνα 1986), σελ. Οι σύγχρονοι Μαρωνίτες του Λιβάνου υποστηρίζουν ότι κατάγονται από τους Μαρδαΐτες, αλλά η άποψη αυτή καταρρίπτεται από το Moosa, M., “The Relation of the Maronites of Lebanon to the Mardaites and al-Jarājima”, Speculum 44 (1969), σελ. 597-608.

Makrypoulias, Ch.G., “The Navy in the Works of Constantine Porphyrogenitus”, Graeco-Arabica 6 (1995), σελ. 152-171.

1. Historical Background

The Mardaïtes first appear in the 7th century, and theories of their origin are divided.1 According to the prevalent view, they are identified with the Djarādjima, who inhabited Mount Amanus or Black Mountain (Arabic: Lukkām) of Syria and the marshy region to the north of Antioch. Their name (plural of Djurdjumānī) derived from either the name of the province of Gurgum, in the region of Germanicia, or from a small town between Aleppo (Halep) and Alexandretta called Djurdjūma, meaning the bastion of the Djarādjima, which the Arabs destroyed in 708, when they suppressed the revolt instigated and supported by the Byzantines.

The Djarādjima were Christians and the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch, but they probably followed the doctrine of monophysitism or monotheletism.2 According to Arabic sources, after the Muslims conquered the region of Antioch in 638, the Arabs subdued the Djarādjima, who were then assigned to guard the mountain passes of Amanus and granted exemption from taxation in exchange.

In the mid-660s, the Arabs brought new settlers to the area, because they suspected that the Christian Djarādjima served Byzantine interests. This caused the reaction of the Djarādjima and led to military confrontations, in which Caliph Muwa‘iyah ibn Abi Sufyan, former commander of Syria, won. The Djarādjima replied by invading the cities of Syria and Palestine under Byzantine commanders. It was probably then that they were given the name «Mardaïtes» by the local people, a name that would follow them in Greek sources. The name possibly derived from the Semite word «maridaye», meaning «guerrilla» or «bandit».3 Their conflicts with the Muslims became more serious in the following years, when the Byzantines decided to use them in diversion against the Arabs.

2. The Activitiy of the Mardaïtes in the Middle East

In 671, the Arabs captured Kyzikos, while in the following years, starting from 673, they blockaded the harbours of Constantinople. Thanks to his powerful fleet and the Greek fire, Emperor Constantine IV (668-685) managed to repel the attacks of the Arabian navy. At the same time, the Byzantines took advantage of the difficulties the Arabs were facing and created a diversion in the Middle East. The Mardaïtes, led by Byzantine officers, occupied the Amanus Mountains as far as the outskirts of Jerusalem (possibly in 677). That became their basis for the invasions against Syria and Lebanon, while they were occasionaly joined by slaves and local Christians. Muwa‘iyah was unable to defend his territory effectively, therofore he sent deputies to sign a peace treaty with Emperor Constantine in 678. According to the terms of the treaty, the Byzantines should cease all Mardaïte attacks in Syria and Lebanon.

The Mardaïte revolt ended ten years later. Although he had renewed the peace treaty with the Arabs in 685, Justinian II (685-695, 705-711) wanted to take advantage of the difficulties Caliph Abd al-Malik was facing because of rebellious movements. Therefore, in 688, he urged the Mardaïtes to start raiding the Arab land again, and reinforced them with cavalry. Abd al-Malik was made to sign a new peace treaty with onerous terms, while the Byzantines would withdraw the Mardaïtes from Amanus. Justinian accepted the term, for which he was criticised by later historians.4 The Mardaïtes who remained in Syria were defeated by the Arabs, who eliminated the Byzantine reinforcements. The Mardaïtes of Syria fought on the side of the Arabs in Iraq and joined them again in the Arabian raids against Byzantine territory in the 8th century, while evidence of their presence in Amanus existed until the 10th century.

3. The Resettlement of the Mardaïtes in Byzantine Territories

According to the sources, the Mardaïtes that fled to Byzantine lands amounted to 12,000. However, it is not clear whether all of the refugees or only men eligible for enlistment were included. The Mardaïtes settled in southeastern Asia Minor, particularly in the districts of Pamphylia, Lycia and Cilicia.

In the early 8th century, the military forces of the Byzantine provinces where the Mardaïtes had settled formed the theme of Kibyrrhaiotai, which included all the provincial naval forces of the empire. Within this framework, the Mardaïtes were incorporated into the naval forces of the theme as an autonomous formation based on the capital Attaleia, while they continued to live in other regions as well.5 They were under a Byzantine officer with the rank of katepano, who was directly appointed by the emperor and was independent of the strategos of the theme. The time those reforms took place remains uncertain, but they were probably contemporary with the establishment of the theme. The Mardaïtes of Attaleia became very famous for their seamanship, particularly for their mastery of fast vessels used for scouting missions, as well as for their hatred towards the Arabs of Syria.

Later on (in the 9th century), a part of the Mardaïtes moved to the themes of the Peloponnese, Nicopolis (including the lands of Epiros and Etoloakarnania) and Kephalenia; in those regions they continued to serve as crew members of thematic fleets.6 Towards the late 9th century, the Mardaïtes of the Peloponnese took part in the campaigns in Sicily, while in 911 and 949 a large number of Mardaïtes from the three themes (more than 5000 in the first case, 3000 in the second) participated in the campaigns against the Arabs of Crete.

The Mardaïtes of Attaleia continued to serving as prominent crew members in the fleet of the theme of Kibyrrhaiotai until the second half of the 10th century, but the decline of the fleet of the Kibyrrhaiotai Theme in the 11th century must have affected them. There is no information about their later history; they must have been gradually absorbed by the local people.

4. Consequences of the Mardaïte Presence in Asia Minor

The Mardaïtes played an important role mainly in the strategy employed by the Byzantines against the Arabs in the 7th century, particularly during the first siege of Constantinople: their raids in Lebanon, combined with the naval defeat of the besiegers, actually compelled the Arabs to raise the siege and sign a peace treaty. The repetition of the terms concerning the withdrawal of the Mardaïtes in the following treaties as well as the Arab insistence in 688 that the Mardaïtes should abandon the Black Μountain reveal the size of the threat the central regions of the caliphate were facing from these allies of the Byzantines.

Although the settlement of the Mardaïtes in Byzantine land weakened the offensive policy of Byzantium in the Middle East, it strengthened the naval forces of the empire in southeastern Asia Minor, since the Mardaïtes soon proved their seamanship and significantly reinforced the fleet of the theme of the Kibyrrhaiotai, mainly in scouting and information gathering. The settlement of part of the Mardaïtes in the western themes had similarly positive results for the small fleets of those themes, which were greatly benefited from the seamanship of this people of Syria, particularly in a period when Byzantium was facing the additional threat of the Arabian fleets of the western Mediterranean.

The settlement of the Mardaïtes in Asia Minor and mainland Greece affected the ethnological composition of the population in those regions. According to a document of the Latin sovereigns of Corfu dated 1365, which ratifies an earlier (1246) decree of Michael II, the ruler of Epirus, referring to a «decarhia Mardatorum», while some European travellers of the second half of the 19th century recognised Semite features in several Greek inhabitants of Attaleia, thus implying that they were of Mardaïte origin. According to some scholars, even the Akritic songs preserved the memory of the Mardaïtes, hidden behind the name Maurioritai («Μαυριορίτες»).

1. P.A. Hollingsworth in The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium 2 (New York – Oxford 1991), p. 1297, see entry ‘Mardaites’, considers them of Persian or Armenian origin. M. Canard in The Encyclopedia of Islam2 2 (Leiden – London 1965), pp. 456-458, see entry ‘Djaradjima’, tends to believe that the Mardaites were of Persian origin. Χ. Στράτο 1 (Athens 1986), pp. 17-39, formulates the theory that the Mardaites of the 7th century were Mards (Iranian bandits) absorbed by the Armenians, who fought as Byzantine mercenaries and had nothing in common with the Djaradjima or the subsequent Mardaites of Asia Minor. Modern Mardaites of Lebanon claim to be descendants of Mardaites, but this view is contestated by Moosa, M., ‘The Relation of the Maronites of Lebanon to the Mardaites and al-Jarajima’, Speculum 44 (1969), pp. 597-608.

2. Χ. Στράτο 1 (Athens 1986), pp. 17-39, believes that they were monophysites, while Κ. Άμαντος, ‘Μαρδαΐται’, Ελληνικά 5 (1932), pp. 130-136, believes that they followed the Orthodox doctrine.

3. Evidence of Mardaites' practicing mainly the guerrilla tactics is a quotation from the Byzantine chronicler Theophanes' work, in de Boor, C. (ed.), Theophanis Chronographia (Leipzig 1883), p. 397, 17-19. In his text, he describes the activity of the Byzantine forces, which were arrayed on the mountains of Bithynia in order to harass the Arabian forces that were besieging Constantinople in 717-718; their skirmishing raids were similar to those of the Mardaites («δίκην Μαρδαϊτ?ν κρυπτόμενοι», lurking as Mardaites).

4. Theophanes, in his Chronography, in de Boor, C. (ed.), Theophanis Chronographia (Leipzig 1883), p. 364, 3-5, mentions that with this movement Justinian tore down a «bronze» wall and amputated the Byzantine power: «τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἐν Συρίᾳ· καὶ πολλοὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς Ῥωμανίαν. See also as above, p. 363, 14-20: ‘καὶ πέμψας ὁ βασιλεὺς προσελάβετο τοὺς Μαρδαΐτας χιλιάδας ιβ΄, τὴν Ῥωμαϊκὴν δυναστείαν ἀκρωτηριάσας.

5. The view that there were Mardaites settled in Antioch of Pisidia and the island of Karpathos as well is based on the fact that, in the 10th century, galeai of the theme of Kibyrrhaiotai were stationed in those regions, as well as on the assumption that this particular type of ship was used exclusively by the Mardaites; see Makrypoulias, Ch.G., ‘The Navy in the Works of Constantine Porphyrogenitus’, Graeco-Arabica 6 (1995), pp. 152-171.

6. Unlike Ahrweiler-Γλύκατζη, Ε., Byzance et la mer (Paris 1966), pp. 399-400, Άμαντος, Κ., ‘Μαρδαΐται’, Ελληνικά 5 (1932), pp. 130-136, believes that the Mardaïtes of the western themes had nothing in common with the Mardaïtes of Attaleia, but took that name because they were seamen too.
